Chasing the Monsoons

Sher's are quite fascinating if you can manage to grasp the deeper meaning. One thing is for sure, they come straight from the heart and there is never any labour lost on creativity. Every word carries its own weight, and enriches the Sher in its own right. Here are a few good ones:

Dil gumsum, Zubaan khamosh,
Yeh aankhein aaj nam kyon hai?
Tumhe kabhi paaya hi na tha,
To aaj khone ka ghum kyon hai?

Beautifully written by the anonymous author, it expresses a lot of emotion in just 4 lines, and touches upon the philosophy of the eternal quest for love. Translated loosely, it means thus:

My heart is lonely and my tongue is quiet,
Why is there defeat in my eyes?
Its not that I had ever acquired you,
Then why is there pain on losing you today?

There is much to be said on the subject, but these 4 lines encapsulate the feeling completely.

On a much happier note is one I have from the movie Tere Mere Sapne:

Ajab teri kudrat, ajab tera khel,
Chachundar ke sar pe, Chameli ka tel?

ROTFL! This was one of the best one's I had ever heard in a movie or else where for that matter! The translation will not make much sense in English but I will do so and try to explain:

Weird is God's nature, weird is God's game/play,
A very fragrant flower's (Chameli) scented oil on the head of a rat?

*stiffling another round of ROTFL*! The essence of this one is that what kind of cruel jokes does God play? Giving a very very good thing to an undeserving person. I know doesn't sound so much fun when said this way, but that's what it translates to. The fun is in the choice of words and the way they entwine.
